Beginner Silk Painting Class

In one short day, you will make a beautiful Silk Painting with Deb. This is an introduction to silk painting.

In this workshop, you will create an 18 x 18 silk painting that can later be quilted or framed. We will be working with Jacquard Red Label dyes. You will learn how to stretch your silk using PVC stretchers, transfer a pattern and use water based resist.

We focus on blending, working wet on wet, and wet on dry. We will also work with special techniques using salt, alcohol and other tools.

Note: Jacquard Red Label dye are heat-fix dyes that require steaming to be permanent. Deb will take the paintings home at the end of the class to steam them and will send them back to you. (We will discuss the steaming process with you and show you how easy you can create your own steamer).

Patterns will be provided. If you prefer to work on your own design, we ask that you keep it to 18 x 18 and send us a copy of the design you have in mind. We need to make sure it is something you can complete in the time frame we have available. Beginner patterns are: Tulips, Coneflowers, Koi Fish or Parrot. (Patterns are pictured below. They can be completed in any color way.)

Teacher will provide the following to be used during the workshop: Silk, all dyes and tools, resist and
applicator, pattern (yours to keep), pencils for transferring design, paint brushes, stretchers.

Intermediate Silk Painting Class

Note: You must take the Beginner Class before taking the Intermediate Class.

This is a follow up to our beginner silk painting workshop. Now that you have the basic understanding of silk painting we will create a larger painting using colored resist. In addition to working with salt and alcohol, you will learn how to use cold wax and colored resist. We will also use additional tools to embellish your painting. Your silk painting can later be quilted or framed. We will have quilted samples and we will discuss quilting ideas. We will again be working with Jacquard Red Label dyes and PVC stretchers.
